Types of
Fire Extinguishers

The several main fire extinguisher agents, namely water, foam, Co2, powder and wet chemical.

Each of the different types of fire extinguisher agents are suitable for different fire classes:

WATER

Suitable for Class A fires (solid combustibles such as wood, paper and textiles). Water extinguishers should only be used on electrical equipment if
di- electrically tested. Caution is required near electrical equipment, as ordinary water is a conductor.

AFFF FOAM

Suitable for Class A fires (solid combustibles such as wood, paper and textiles). Water extinguishers should only be used on electrical equipment if
di- electrically tested. Caution is required near electrical equipment, as ordinary water is a conductor.

Carbon Dioxide (CO2)

(CO2): Class B and electrical equipment as CO2 is non- conductive and does not leave any residue.

ABC POWDER

Most versatile and can be used on Class A, B, C (flammable gases) and electrical equipment.

WET CHEMICAL

Designed specifically for use on Class F (deep fat) fires, and sometimes class A.
